Overview

PURPOSE STATEMENT:

The Senior Commercial Development Manager – Clean Energy is responsible for spearheading growth initiatives by targeting and securing new commercial and industrial customers who are not currently connected to the company’s natural gas or propane infrastructure, as well as exploring existing propane customers who could be transitioned to natural gas or renewable fuels, across both regulated and non-regulated markets. This role will be the primary point of contact for these customers and will coordinate closely with internal technical teams and the broader Clean Energy group to develop customized energy solutions. The Senior Commercial Development Manager – Clean Energy is responsible for evaluating the economic feasibility and strategic value of each opportunity to the company.

Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lead and/or manage strategic planning efforts to expand the utility’s clean energy portfolio in alignment with Company’s long-term strategic goals in clean energy and sustainability .
  • Develops a strategic vision and concept for each project and prioritizes initiatives by ranking them to optimize resource allocation.
  • Collaborates with the Director, Project and Business Development and necessary stakeholders to evaluate and plan new business opportunities.
  • Coordinates the development of technical and commercial solutions for each project, providing direction and guidance to analysts in assessing the projects' economic value.
  • Possesses the ability to structure, negotiate, close joint ventures, partnerships, and agreements with current and/or new partners or customers.
  • Manages relationships with developers, contractors, investors, government entities, and other stakeholders.
  • Monitors key performance indicators and develop dashboards and reports to provide clear visibility into project status and risks, while preparing presentations for internal and external audiences
  • Proactively identify ways to integrate our utility services (e.g., natural gas infrastructure) into third-party development or infrastructure projects.
  • Supports regulatory proceedings for projects, as required, working with the Clean Energy, Regulatory and Legal teams.
  • Partners with appropriate departments and operations to ensure consistency and accuracy in budgeting, and capital planning.
  • Tracks project progress, control costs, and report regularly on milestones, changes, and budget adherence.
  • Delivers financial analysis and guidance to the Director of Project & Business Development and senior leaders to assist with project evaluations and decisions.
  • Develops robust financial models and investment cases to assess project viability.
  • Monitors industry trends, policy changes, and market conditions that could impact project economics or financial risks
  • Serves as a key liaison between internal departments (e.g., Sales, Operations, Engineering, Regulatory Affairs) to ensure alignment of goals and expectations.
  • Leads or participates in internal reviews and external stakeholder engagements.

 

OTHER FUNCTIONS/RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Complies with all safety rules and cooperates in the fullest in the promotion of safety and safe work habits, to include the reporting of any unsafe conditions or acts. Maintains all EH&S training on a current basis.
  • Complies with all applicable corporate and Hawaii Gas policies and procedures.
  • Maintains assigned work area and equipment in a clean, orderly and safe manner; performs housekeeping duties as required and/or instructed. Works in a safe and responsible manner.
  • Performs all other related duties as instructed by supervisor/manager.

Qualifications

Required Education and/or Work Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Finance, Economics Environmental Science or other related field.
  • At least seven (7) years of experience in a large-scale commercial or business development role in the energy, utilities or infrastructure industry.
  • At least three (3) years of negotiating contracts and managing contracts, including development agreements, vendor contracts, and partnership deals.
  • Proven experience in reviewing financial models and investment analyses.
  • Working knowledge of clean energy technologies, regulatory frameworks, and cost recovery mechanisms.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Suite (Word, Excel and PowerPoint)

Preferred Education and/or Work Experience:

  • Master’s degree in Business Administration, Finance, Economics Environmental Science or other related field.
  • Ten (10) years of experience in a commercial or business development role.
  • Experience working in a union environment.

Preferred Licensure, Certification, Registration or Designation:

  • Project Management Professional (PMP) Certificate.
