Overview

PURPOSE STATEMENT:

The SNG Plant’s Technical Lead leads the Technical Team, including engineers and other professionals, to provide technical support for the safety, compliance, operation, and maintenance of the SNG Plant and other Hawaii Gas production and processing facilities. The Technical Team role encompasses providing comprehensive engineering expertise, mentoring the team to enhance their skills, leading project management initiatives, contributing to the plant's systems architecture, maintaining crucial standards and best practices, and directing technical incident investigations for continuous improvement. The Technical Lead may also collaborate with other departments and external partners as needed.

Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Collaborates with plant leadership, under the direction of the plant manager, to develop and implement the plant's strategic direction.
  • Offers engineering expertise to support the technical needs of the SNG plant including areas such as project management, equipment design, developing specifications, and troubleshooting equipment failures.
  • Provides leadership and mentoring to a team of Engineers and other technical personnel, including Compliance Document Control Specialists, with the aim of expanding their engineering capabilities. (lower priority)
  • Leads the team of engineers responsible for detailed design of improvements to plant processes, equipment, and standards as part of the SNG Plant’s Management of Change processes.
  • Leads and oversees project management activities within the technical team. Contributes to the design and architecture of the plant’s various systems, including electrical, air, feedwater, process feed (naphtha), hydrogen, Benfield, CO2, and control systems.
  • Oversees staff responsible for maintaining and updating reference materials. Reviews and approves updates to ensure alignment with industry best practices, applicable regulations, and standards that support the plant’s reliability, safety, and operational efficiency.
  • Leads technical incident investigations related to equipment or procedural failures, ensuring accurate root cause analysis and prescribing appropriate corrective actions. This may involve generating reports and potentially delegating some of these responsibilities to subordinates.
  • Collaborates with other departments within Hawaii Gas, and potentially external stakeholders, particularly on projects that have broad impact or when providing technical expertise to other teams.
  • Supports the Plant Manager in integrating alternative source supplies with SNG Plant activities, providing technical input to support the Company’s Clean Energy Initiatives.
  • Assists in developing and implementing Emergency Response processes and contingencies, ensuring the reliability of plant production during emergency events.
  • Supports the development of capital and operating budgets by providing technical scope, cost estimates, and performance data for projects and maintenance activities.
  • Participates in the planning and execution of large-scale projects ensuring technical quality and compliance with regulations.
  • Stays informed of changes in relevant industry laws, regulations, technologies, and trends, and recommend technical improvements accordingly.

OTHER FUNCTIONS/RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Complies with all safety rules and cooperates in the fullest in the promotion of safety and safe work habits, to include the reporting of any unsafe conditions or acts. Maintains all EH&S training on a current basis.
  • Complies with all applicable corporate and Hawaii Gas policies and procedures.
  • Maintains assigned work area and equipment in a clean, orderly and safe manner; performs housekeeping duties as required and/or instructed. Works in a safe and responsible manner.
  • Performs all other related duties as instructed by supervisor/manager.

Qualifications

Required Education and/or Work Experience:

  • Minimum of 5 years of technical work experience in maintenance, reliability, plant engineering design, and process engineering.
  • Bachelor's degree in a technical field, science, or engineering.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite (e.g. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.)

Preferred Education and/or Work Experience:

  • Successful experience in a leadership role.
  • 10 years of technical work experience in maintenance, reliability, plant engineering design, and process engineering.
  • 5+ years of project management experience.
  • Good working knowledge of the following:
    • OSHA 29 CFR Part 1910 Process Safety Management (PSM)
    • EPA 68 CFR Risk Management Program (RMP)
    • ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Codes
    • NFPA 70 National Electrical Code (NEC)
    • PHMSA 49 CFR Parts 192 and 193
    • API 510, 520, 521, 570, 572, 573, 574, 578, 653
    • NFPA 58 Liquified Petroleum Gas Code
  • Working experience with Instrumentation and Control Systems
  • Working experience using Computer Aided Design (CAD) software
  • Working experience in a Union environment.

Required Licensure, Certification, Registration or Designation:

  • Post requisite: HAZWOPER, First Aid, CPR
  • Valid Hawaii Driver’s License

Preferred Licensure, Certification, Registration or Designation:

  • Valid Hawaii Professional Engineer License
  • AMPP/NACE Corrosion Technologist Certification
