Overview

PURPOSE STATEMENT:

Works under general supervision of the Branch Manager or direction of the Operations Superintendent/Staff Engineer, West Hawaii, independently performs work from written/verbal orders following specific policies/procedures/methods involving the operation of a tank and/or bobtail truck for the transport and delivery of bulk LP gas from the Kona Base Yard or other LP gas supply facility to residential and commercial customers.

Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Receives delivery schedule and special instructions, as applicable, from the Senior CS Rep/Technician; organizes tickets into delivery route and makes all required preparations for delivery.
  • Performs pre-trip check on tank truck (following D.O.T. Fleet Safety specifications), completes required forms, fuels, checks trucks for general operating requirements, and ascertains that all required equipment is available and in good operation condition.
  • Drives tank truck to customer’s location, ensures correct customer delivery by checking tank serial number with delivery schedule, beginning gauge reading, connects discharge hose, opens bleeder, operates transfer pump, compressor, pipeline valves to unload LP gas. Closes bleeder, disconnects hose, and ensures receptacle is in a safe condition. Reads gauges, records amount delivered and leaves delivery ticket receipt with customer. May accept cash payment and is accountable for same. May perform light service work for out-of-gas customers.
  • Returns to the Yard at the end of workday, checks truck to determine operating status (notifies Foreman if repairs are necessary), and sets chock block. Completes and submits Daily Truck Inspection report, GDS meter tickets and cash payments.
  • Maintains assigned work areas/tank truck and/or its equipment in a clean, orderly, and safe operating condition; performs housekeeping chores as required and/or directed.
  • Provides and extends at all times a courteous and tactful demeanor when dealing with all customers or the public. Responds to customer inquiries as qualified or refers customer to proper Company sources. May advise or instruct consumer in the properly and efficient operation of their appliances/equipment.
  • Complies with and enforces all safety rules, regulations and practices in effect and established/adopted by the Company. Promotes safety, safe work habits, and good housekeeping to include the reporting and rectifying, as qualified, any unsafe conditions or act. Maintains all EH&S training on a current basis. Performs emergency response function as required; effectuates emergency repairs and/or shuts-down gas supply when appropriate/necessary. Stands-by at the site when necessary, until properly relieved by appropriate personnel.
  • Performs clerical/administrative duties such as preparing reports, inputting data into the computer, etc.
  • Performs as Cylinder Delivery Driver or Installer Helper when required.
  • Performs related work as directed/required.

Qualifications

Required Education:

  • Preferably a high school graduate with technical schooling.

Required Work Experience:

  • At least four years successful and progressive experience in work with LPG of which two years must have been as a Cylinder Delivery Driver; these experience requirements may be reduced at management’s discretion with approval from HR, based on need and for the individual who demonstrates exceptional ability and skills to perform the duties of Tank Truck Driver.
  • Must be a safe and competent driver, cognizant of all traffic laws and have a clean traffic abstract. Proven record to converse with customers and the general public in a tactful and courteous manner to handle inquiries, provide instructions and/or explain work as required.
  • Possesses a very good working knowledge of departmental operating rules and procedures, pertinent codes (such as NFPA #58 and #59) regulations, standards and safety rules/regulations/practices in addition to standard practices and procedures for this trade.
  • Qualified in all phases of the work described.
  • Very proficient in the proper use of the tools, materials, and equipment of the trade and have a good safety record.

Required Licensure, Certification, Registration or Designation:

  • Must possess a valid Class B, CDL license with Hazardous Material with no restrictions on air brakes or transmission type, and valid Medical Examiner's Certificate per 49 CFR 391.41 through 391.49.
  • Completed all required Department of Transportation (DOT) Federal/State, OSHA Federal/State and NFPA courses or programs.
  • Must maintain at least minimum passing scores per regulations, for all recurring Federal/State and NFPA courses or programs.
