Overview

PURPOSE STATEMENT:

Works under general supervision of the Supervisor, Construction and directly assists higher grade construction and maintenance workers as an experienced helper working from written/verbal orders following specific policies/procedures/methods/codes of simple/non-difficult/diverse maintenance, repair, and installation requirements at the Yard or at project sites.  Performs as a PIC or Tankerman.

Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assists higher grade maintenance personnel in the lifting and placement of LP gas containers or workshop equipment in required positions; in the removal and installation of container bolting, valves, gauges and other fittings; in the loading and unloading of LP gas containers to and from transportation racks or vehicles; in vessel purging operations; in the rigging of tackle; and other work using a variety of manual/power tools and equipment.
  • Cleans vessels and fittings using wire brush, chipping hammer and scraper; performs rough exterior surface preparations using manual sandblasting equipment, hand and power tools; paints LP gas equipment, such as tanks, cylinders, meters, regulators, cylinder stands, etc. using brush, hand roller and spraying apparatus.
  • Segregates scraps, salvages reusable parts, keeps shelves containing parts in neat order, returns tools to proper bins, cleans filters, uncrates materials, sweeps and maintains shop and yard in a clean, orderly and safe condition.
  • Assists and/or performs in a Tankerman’s capacity in the filling, discharging of LP gas and the maintenance of the barge as required/directed and qualified.
  • Must qualify to operate and performs as a Cylinder Delivery Driver and Tank Truck Driver when required. Operates loader, and fork lift as assigned; must qualify to operate specified equipment.
  • Maintains assigned work areas and equipment in a clean, orderly and safe condition.
  • Works in a safe and responsible manner. Complies with all safety rules, regulations and practices in effect and as established/adopted by the Company and assures proper safety signs/warning devices are working correctly and/or in place according to safety rules/standards and uses/wears prescribed safety equipment/clothing as required/directed.  Cooperates in the fullest in the promotion of safety, safe work habits, and good housekeeping to include the reporting of any unsafe conditions or acts.  Maintains all EH&S training on a current basis.
  • Performs clerical/administrative duties such as documenting work on all applicable company forms to include logging all preventative maintenance actions on hard-copy form or inputs into software using PC terminal following established procedures and prepares reports as required.
  • Performs related work as required and/or directed.

Qualifications

Required Education and/or Work Experience 

  • At least one year progressive and successful experience in the job duties described in the Construction Unit. 
  • Must possess a valid Class B, CDL license with Hazardous Material endorsement with no restrictions on air brakes or transmission type, and valid Medical Examiner’s Certificate per 49 CFR 391.41 through 391.49. 
  • Basic knowledge of pertinent codes, regulations, standards, and safety rules such as NFPA Pamphlet No. 58 and local plumbing code, in addition to standard practices and procedures. 
  • Must have a good working knowledge of tools and equipment of the trade.
  • Requires a high degree of mechanical aptitude and a good safety record. 
  • Must complete all required Department of Transportation Federal/State and OSHA Federal/State courses and programs as a condition of continued employment. 
  • Must maintain at least minimum passing scores per regulations, for all recurring Federal/State courses or programs. 
  • Must be qualified for and retain required security certifications such as TWIC and AOA, or other clearances required by governmental agencies. 
  • Must be certifiable to operate plant forklift. 

Preferred Education and/or Work Experience:

  • Technical School education preferred; completion of apprenticeship training program desired.  

 

Working Conditions/Environment/Physical Demands:

  • Primarily outdoor work.  Exposure to gas fumes varies from low to an occasional high concentration which requires the incumbent to use gas mask. 
  • May be required to work after hours occasionally on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays; subject to emergency calls and on-call assignments.
