Overview

PURPOSE STATEMENT:

Under general supervision, performs on standard projects or phases of major projects; consults with supervisor routinely.

 

Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Performs all the engineering requirements of assigned projects to include the development and design of gas service specifications; the evaluation of proposed installation for compliance issues; provision of technical recommendations; the preparation of cost estimates, securing of approvals through CER and management of budget, conformance to engineering standards and regulations; submitting for City & County Planning approval and Fire Permits for LPG installations; solicitation of bids for contractors where necessary. 
  • Assists other departments and neighbor island branches in the interpretation of codes and regulations. Provides expertise requested for new business projects and/or mains or services replacements or relocation and LPG tank installations. Conducts analytical and special studies on engineering proposals and field requirements. 
  • Provides technical assistance to architects, engineers, consultants and developers. Assists customers with the design and troubleshooting of their gas systems. Reviews construction plans and proposals by other companies to preclude any conflicts with the utility gas network.  Provides consultation and assists in coordination with contracting companies working near buried gas facilities. Prepares response letters to requests for plan reviews from other utilities, contractors, architects and developers. 
  • Prepares company standards, policies, and procedures, ensuring conformance to federal and local codes.
  • Enforces appropriate safety rules and procedures; provides for a safe work environment. Complies with all written safety rules and procedures and reports all unsafe acts and conditions and corrects those within authority. Maintains all EH&S training on a current basis. 
  • Keeps abreast of technological changes and developments in the industry and works with respective departments to implement viable changes. 

 

OTHER FUNCTIONS/RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Complies with all applicable Hawaii Gas policies and procedures.
  • Maintains assigned work area and equipment in a clean, orderly and safe manner; performs housekeeping duties as required and/or instructed. Works in a safe and responsible manner.
  • Performs all other related duties as instructed by supervisor/manager.

Qualifications

Required Education and/or Work Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Mechanical Engineering or equivalent combination of related experience and education.
  • One to two years satisfactory performance as Staff Engineer or in-field total engineering experience of four years. Appropriate PE license may be substituted for experience.
  • Good working knowledge of NFPA 58, UFC, City and County Plumbing Codes and 49 CFR 192.
  • Proficient in the MS Office suite of tools (Word and Excel), MS Project.

Required Licensure, Certification, Registration or Designation:

  • Valid driver’s license.

Preferred Licensure, Certification, Registration or Designation:

  • Professional Engineering license.

Working Conditions/Environment:

  • Working conditions are normal for an office environment.
  • Work may require occasional weekend and/or evening work.
