Overview

Working as a crewmember following specific instructions, methods, or procedures, performs as an experienced helper in assisting higher grade crewmembers in any and all jobs (as they apply to the specific branch operations) relating to LPG tanks, cylinders, and associated appurtenances and/or relating to gas mains and services distribution systems along public rights-of-way up to the meter/regulator set. Performs in other positions as assigned, depending on the island and location. 

Responsibilities

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES/ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

 

1. Assists higher grade crewmembers such as Leadman, Installer 1/C, Crewfitter in any and 

    all of his/her job duties such as:  

    • The delivery, setting/relocation and installation of LPG tanks, cylinders and/or appliances including the piping from tank to riser; installs meters, valves and regulators. Utilizes leak-detecting solution and gas detection or measurement equipment to ensure the integrity of the installation and system. The removal of LPG tank and cylinders and plugging of gas lines following established procedures and/or processes.
    • The installation, maintenance, relocation, repair replacement and/or termination of the gas mains and services distribution systems using manual tools of the trade including pick and shovel, and operating various equipment such as jack hammer, pavement breaker, mud gun, pneumatic or gas-powered tampers, drill gun, electric drill, ect. Inspects, checks, test pipe system with air or gas; reads/interprets pressure gauge to determine system is not leaking and is performing according to design.

2. Performs general maintenance of tanks in the field including: Chipping rust and painting; 

     removing covers; repairing or replace fittings, regulators and meters; servicing valves,

     ect. Cuts/threads pipe using pipe cutters/threader machine and installs pipe and fittings. 

 

3. Responds to a variety of trouble calls and performs emergency response function;

     effectuates emergency repairs and/or shuts-down gas supply when

     appropriate/necessary. Stands by the site when necessary until properly relieved by

     appropriate personnel. 

 

4. Provides customer service and extends at all times a courteous and tactful demeanor

    when dealing with customers or the public. May advise or instruct consumer in the 

    proper care of the tank, appliances and equipment.  

     

5. Drives truck and maintains necessary truck supplies and equipment. Operates crane as 

    required.

 

6. Performs clerical/administrative duties such as preparing reports, inputting data into the

    computer, ect.

 

7. Works in a safe and responsible manner. Complies with all safety rules, regulations and

     practices in effect and as established/adopted by the Company. Cooperates in the fullest

     in the promotion of safety, safe work habits, and good housekeeping to include the

     reporting of any unsafe conditions or acts. Maintains all EH&S training oon a current

     basis. 

 

8. Performs in other positions as may be assigned/required depending on island location

     such as Meter Reader, Cylinder Delivery Driver, or Relief Tank Truck Driver; performs 

     related work as required and/or directed.

Qualifications

BACKGROUND/EXPERIENCE

 

EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION

  • Preferably a high school graduate with technical schooling.
  • Completion of plumbing apprenticeship helpful.
  • Completed all required Department of Transportation (COT) Federal/State, OSHA Federal/State and NFPA courses or programs.
  • Must maintain at least minimum passing scores per regulations, for all recurring Federal/State and NFPA courses or programs.
  • Must possess a valid Class B, CDL license with Hazardous Material endorsement, Crane Operator's certificate, and valid Medical Examiner's Certificate per 49 CFR 391.41 through 391.49.

EXPERIENCE

  • At least one year progressive and successful experience in the job duties described.
  • Plumbing experience helpful.
  • Basic knowledge of pertinent codes, regulations, standards, and safety rules such as NFPA 58 and local plumbing code, in addition to standard practices and procedures.
  • Must have a good working knowledge of departmental operating rules and procedures, and tools and equipment of the trade.
  • Requires a high degree of mechanical aptitude and have a good safety record.
  • Must be a safe and competent driver, cognizant of all traffic laws and have a clean traffic abstract.
  • Ability to operate a computer with designated software programs.
